Padres Bash Big Homers to Beat Giants

Late blasts from Sanchez, Myers lead to extra-innings win

For whatever reason, the Padres are really good in 3-game series and really bad in 4-game series.

San Diego is 9-6 when they play a team three days in a row … but 2-10 in 4-game sets. On Sunday they finished a trio in San Francisco so you had a pretty good idea that something positive was going to happen.

The Padres got a pair of timely home runs to beat the Giants 5-2 in 12 innings at AT&T Park. The first came in the 9th inning. San Francisco led 2-0 when Hector Sanchez smashed a 2-run shot off Giants closer Mark Melancon to tie it up and force extras.

The second bomb came in the 12th inning. Wil Myers hit another 3-run shot, the second straight game he’s done that, off George Kontos to give the Padres the win. It was the team-leading 7th home run of the year for Myers, who had a chance to be the hero thanks to a tremendous job by the San Diego bullpen.

Starting pitcher Clayton Richard gave up two runs in 5.1 innings and after him Brad Hand, Brandon Maurer, Ryan Buchter and Jose Torres combined to toss 6.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing a combined two hits while striking out six.

So the Padres finish April at 11-16, which is not too shabby when you consider they played 18 games on the road and only nine at home, where they have a 5-4 record. In May that flips. San Diego gets 18 games at Petco Park and just 11 on the road.

The Friars start an 8-game homestand on Tuesday night against the first-place Colorado Rockies in former manager Bud Black’s first game back in the East Village.
