The Padres enter their final homestand of 2017 tied for the 7th-worst record in baseball. They have three games against the Diamondbacks and four with the Rockies, who are currently the two National League Wild Card teams.
That means they’re either going to move in to the off-season with a nice winning mojo or make everyone hoping for a tank very happy.
San Diego made a few roster moves on Monday. Now that the El Paso Chihuahuas season is over (they came one game short of winning back-to-back Pacific Coast League championships) the Padres recalled outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Travis Jankowski and right-handed pitcher Tim Melville.
The Friars also added catcher Rocky Gale and infielder Christian Villanueva and designated infielder Dusty Coleman and right-handed pitcher Jose Valdez for assignment.
Renfroe returns after being demoted in August. At the time he had struck out 19 times in 13 games. He went back to AAA, where he was the 2016 PCL MVP, and hit a ridiculous .509 in 14 regular season games.
Jankowski played just 17 games before going on the disabled list with a broken foot. He played 35 games in El Paso and helped the Chihuahuas reach the PCL playoffs.
