One Pickle of a Game

Everyone has heard of football, basketball, baseball and kickball. But what the heck is pickleball?

Believe it or not, pickleball has been around for more than 50 years. The game is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It's played with two or four people on a badminton-size court, with the net lowered to 34 inches. This game, which resembles a mini-game of tennis, is played with a plastic baseball with holes -- similar to a Whiffle ball -- and wooden paddles.

The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a four-day California Senior Olympics Pickleball Tournament starting Tuesday. The tournament will feature more than 200 players from across the region, competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles for adults’ ages 50 and older. For those 19 and up, the tournament will include an open men and women’s double competition.

Pickleball was named after a cocker spaniel named Pickles, who co-invented the game while chasing stray balls and hiding them in the bushes according to the USA Pickleball Association's website.

Don’t miss out on your chance to register for one pickle of a tournament.
