One Bad Inning Sinks Padres

Reds get eight hits in the 2nd inning to win rain-shortened game

Rain in Cincinnati cut Saturday’s game between the Padres and Reds to just six innings.

The good news is the Padres pitching staff tossed five scoreless innings. The bad news that other inning was possibly their worst of the season.

Cincy sent 11 hitters to the plate in a 7-run 2nd inning to beat the Friars 7-2. Starter Robbie Erlin tossed a perfect 1st inning but here’s how his next trip to the mound went:

Sacrifice fly (2-0)

And that was pretty much that. The Padres got their two runs on a 4th-inning home run by Eric Hosmer, his 15th of the year. The Padres can split the 4-game series on Sunday if rookie Jacob Nix can beat Tyler Mahle.

The bad weather has pushed the start time of Sunday's game to 1:10 p.m. San Diego time, three hours later than originally scheduled.
