The season is over for Peyton Manning.

Peyton Manning will not be back this season, all but dashing any hope the Indianapolis Colts had of turning their season around.

The game's highest-paid player had hoped to make it back after undergoing surgery on his neck, but team owner Jim Irsay announced at a breakfast meeting with Super Bowl donors Monday that Manning will miss the entire season, according to WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

Without Manning, the Colts go from a Super Bowl contender to perhaps the worst team in football. If that ends up being the case, they could find themselves with next year's No. 1 pick in the draft, and a shot at Andrew Luck, who could be Manning's heir apparent. They are currently 0-3, after losing Sunday night to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Manning, whose father Archie, was an NFL quarterback and whose brother Eli is the New York Giants signal caller, is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Manning has had three operations on his neck in the last 19 months. He had started 227 consecutive games, including the playoffs, before he missed the Colts' Week 1 game.

Before the start of the season, he signed a five-year, $90 million contract.
