Mr. Football Will Go to Stanford

A local teen recently named California's high school football player of the year is going to stay in his home state for college.

Cathedral Catholic's star running back Tyler Gaffney silenced speculation by announcing Stanford (over Notre Dame) as his college choice.

The Mira Mesa resident is the first county high school football player in decades to be named as player of the year. He is also considered to be one of the top fullbacks in the country, according to Scout.com and Rivals.com.

The Cathedral Catholic senior’s final season was a sweet one. The Dons had a 14-0 season, with titles in both Division II and a San Diego Section Division III. Gaffney ran 2,787 yards with 48 rushing touchdowns, an all-time county record. With 56 touchdowns this season, Gaffney is fourth all-time in the state.

Now "Mr. Football" wants to play baseball at Stanford.

"I think it's a great choice," Cathedral coach Sean Doyle told the North County Times. "How can you go wrong? It’s a football program on the rise and an incredible baseball program, and to be able to play both in that academic setting is great."

Although Stanford already has Toby Gerhart as their fullback, Gaffney said he would most likely get some time on the field as a freshman.

“That was a big thing,” Gaffney told the North County Times.
