Moniak Signs With Phillies

#1 Overall Pick From La Costa Canyon High Agrees To Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies wasted little time getting Encinitas native Mickey Moniak under contract.

The number one overall selection of the 2016 MLB draft signed on the dotted line Monday night and tweeted, “It’s go time! #GoPhillies” shortly after enjoying the moment with his family.

A speedy centerfielder that is considered a five-tool prospect, Moniak hit .476 with 12 triples, seven home runs and 46 RBIs in his senior year at La Costa Canyon High School.

Moniak had committed to UCLA but was stoked to begin his pro career once he was the first player picked on June 9th.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Moniak was also the first prep outfielder selected No. 1 overall since Delmon Young went to Tampa Bay in 2003. The Phillies chose Pat Burrell the only other time they held the No. 1 pick in 1998.
