Olympic Slalom Champ Mikaela Shiffrin Out Indefinitely

Mikaela Shiffrin says there is still no timetable for her return to skiing after tearing a knee ligament while warming up last weekend.

The Olympic and world slalom champion posted an update on Instagram on Tuesday. Shiffrin says she knows many people want to know when she will ski and race again, "but we just don't have any crystal balls."

The 20-year-old American does not need surgery. She tore her medial collateral ligament in her right knee during a wipeout while preparing for a giant slalom last Saturday in Sweden. She also suffered a bone bruise.

Shiffrin was considered the top contender to teammate Lindsey Vonn in the World Cup overall race, especially with Tina Maze taking the season off and defending champ Anna Fenninger sidelined with a knee injury.
