The medical examiner's office issues its finding in the death of a Olympic silver medalist found dead Tuesday morning at the Solana Beach home of a friend.

Officials said Wednesday that San Diego native Mike Whitmarsh committed suicide.

Whitmarsh was found Tuesday in the garage a friend's Solana Beach home. He was 46 years old.

Whitmarsh died from carbon-monoxide poisoning after inhaling car-exhaust fumes, according to the medical examiner's office.

The San Diego native played basketball for the University of San Diego and had a brief stint in the NBA. He later took up volleyball and won a medal at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

Whitmarsh is survived by his wife and two children.
