Local HS Champ Gets World Series Win

Phillies Edge Out the Rays in Game 1 of World Series

Cole Hamels helped lead Rancho Bernardo High School to CIF championships. On Wednesday night, he led the Phillies to a win in Game 1 of the World Series over the Rays.

Hamels worked seven innings to get the win, and pitched out of a jam in the third, getting BJ Upton to hit into a double play. The Phillies won 3-2 behind Hamels who called that double play the turning point.

“The lineup that Tampa has, they’re very devastating,” said Hamels. “Being able to get that ground ball out of them and get the double play was definitely the momentum swing in our favor for the game.”

A big accomplishment for Hamels who, at just 24, could be a key factor in the Series. Sports Illustrated  writer Michael Bamberger profiled the pitcher and described him as having a "relaxed, see-you-at-the-Eagles-concert manner."

In the article, Cole's dad Gary, a school administrator, is quoted as describing Cole's high school games as inundated with scouts, "each with a radar gun."

Hamels graduated from RBHS in 2002. He pitched in the minors until his rookie year with the Phillies in 2006.
