He's Mr. Football

For the first time in decades, a San Diego County high school football player has been named the player of the year.

The award officially designates Cathedral Catholic running back Tyler Gaffney as California's Mr. Football. The senior led the Dons to a 14-0 record. His team also claimed state and CIF San Diego Section titles.

Gaffney is in good company. Previous winners include Marcus Allen and John Elway and dozens of college All-Americans and Heisman Trophy winners.

"This is a great accomplishment," Gaffney told the North County Times. "First you're named the MVP of your team, and that is 70 guys right there.... I can't really ask for anything more than that."

Gaffney is mulling his next move. He will decide in the next couple weeks whether to go on to Notre Dame, USC or Stanford.
