In the first month of the American Hockey League season the Gulls are still probably trying to figure things out. Towards the top of the list are how to get the power play going and who’s going to be the #1 goaltender.
The Gulls had eight shots with a man advantage and only scored twice and made a mid-game change between the pipes in a 4-2 loss at Stockton on Friday night.
In the first period the Gulls were on the power play for eight minutes and the only goal that was scored was by a guy who doesn’t play for them anymore. Former Gull Joseph Cramarossa scored short-handed to give the Heat a 2-0 lead.
In the 2nd period San Diego finally broke through when Kalle Kossila scored with a man advantage with help from Escondido native Austin Ortega. Kossila scored both Gulls goals, both on the power play.
After allowing three goals on 19 shots starting goalie Kevin Boyle was lifted. Leland Irving, making his San Diego debut, played the 3rd period and stopped all 14 shots he faced. The Heat scored with an empty net to put the game away.
The Gulls fall to 2-2 on the season. They play the Heat again in Stockton on Saturday night.
