The Gulls started the season 0-6. It took them all of eight games to get back to the .500 mark.
San Diego whipped Ontario 5-1 on Saturday night to run their season record to 7-7-0-0 and put them one win away from 4th place in the Pacific Division, which (and yes I know it's early but it's important any time of the season) would put them into the AHL playoffs.
But the way this offense is going they probably won't stop at just 4th place. During their streak of seven wins in eight games the Gulls have averaged more than five goals a game.
After a scoreless 1st period on Saturday night Chase De Leo got the scoring started when he took a pass from Chris Wideman right in front of the net and forced the puck past Reign goalie Cal Petersen. It was a pure effort goal to put San Diego on top 1-0.
The Gulls got another one in the 2nd when their penalty kill came up huge. With Ontario on a power play Justin Kloos took off on a breakaway and beat Petersen with a pretty backhand. The Gulls scored down a man ... so they decided to score up a man.
In the 3rd period Daniel Sprong went hard to the net and squeezed off a shot that deflected off Reign forward Mario Kempe and in for a power play goal. San Diego added a couple more after Ontario pulled the goalie.
The Gulls finished what a week and a half ago seemed like a brutal stretch of six games in nine days with five wins. Now they get a week off to rest before welcoming the Stockton Heat on Saturday the 23rd.
