Darkness Pushes Farmers Insurance Open to Monday Finish

After five playoff holes we still don't have a champion at Torrey Pines

In 2015 Jason Day won the Farmers Insurance Open in a playoff. At the age of 35, Alex Noren has never won a PGA Tour event. They’ll have to wait until Monday to see who gets to pad their resume.

The sun over Torrey Pines gave up before the players did so we are going to have a Monday finish on the South Course after a loooooooong day of golf.

Day, Noren and Ryan Palmer were tied at 10-under par so they went back to play the 18th hole again. That’s where Day and Noren started playing copycat. Both made a birdie while Palmer was knocked out of contention with a par so the two international players (Day is from Australia while Noren hails from Sweden) hit the 18th tee once more.

Both players were on the green in two and 2-putted for birdie so it was off to 16 ... where both players made par. Ditto 17, which took them back to 18 again where they both, almost predictably, made another birdie, this time under the dark of night to push the event back another day.

Day teed off at 9:45 in the morning on Sunday. Noren teed off just 20 minutes later. Neither man finished playing until 5:45 at night, making for one of the longest days they’ll ever have as a professional golfer.

Day and Noren will play their 6th sudden death playoff hole (the 18th again) at 8:00 a.m. in La Jolla. If they’re still deadlocked they’ll follow the same pattern, playing 16, 17, and 18 until somebody wins.
