Chargers Suffer First Injury of 2016

Wide receiver goes down with a knee injury at training camp

It's obvious. It's cliché. But it's true. All you really want during an NFL training camp is for everyone to get out healthy.

The Chargers, who have been hammered by injuries the last couple of years, suffered their first major one of 2016 just two days in to practice. Wide receiver Stevie Johnson made a diving catch on Sunday afternoon, then got up and tried to run again.

That's when he crumpled in to a heap on the ground. Johnson tried to get back on his feet but could not put any pressure on his right leg and had to be helped off the field. The Chargers say it's a knee injury but won't know the extent of it until Monday.

Head Coach Mike McCoy knows if they lose Johnson for a while, they lose a big offensive asset

“Stevie, I really like the way he works,” said McCoy. “He really did some nice out there today before he went down. He shows up every day and does his job and works hard. He’s a pro.”

If Johnson is out for a prolonged period Dontrelle Inman will have the first shot at being the Chargers’ #3 receiver behind Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin. On Monday the Bolts will hold their first practice in full pads and hope nobody else has a physical setback.
