Chargers Filled Their Needs

"It's just the day after."  That's how Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith felt on Monday after completing the draft and signing 18 free agents.

"We filled our needs," said Smith. "It takes time to evaluate what you've got."

They've got a pass rushing outside linebacker in Larry English, who was their first-round choice out of Northern Illinois.

"He's nasty all over the field," Smith said. "We envision him with Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips.  Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera will have [English] in creative packages to put some pressure on the quarterback."

Another "nasty" draft  choice is third-round choice and former Texas Tech guard Louis Vasquez. They added defensive tackle Vaughn Martin, out of Canada, in the fourth round, who was caught on U-Tube bowling over Chargers scout Tom Gibbons during a drill.

"We kid him a little bit," Smith said about Gibbons. "It was special to see one of our scouts put his life on the line to find us a player."

The Chargers get to see the draft choices, free agents and all of their veteran players on the practice field this weekend for their mini camp.
