Cashner Dominates Phils

Early on it was evident both starting pitchers brought their A-game to Petco Park on Monday night. As the strikeouts, ground outs and double plays mounted the game whizzed by at a breakneck pace. Two hours and eight minutes after the first pitch the contest was over. The Padres beat the Phillies 1-0 to open their final homestand of the season.

Cashner (4-7) struck out seven and allowed just two-hits in his second complete game shutout of the season. Phillies starter Jerome Williams (3-2) pitched into the eighth. His line was impressive as well. Williams struck out six, giving up just three hits, but in the end was the hard luck loser.

The Padres only run came in the second inning. Cashner was safe at first on an error by third baseman Cody Asche which allowed Rene Rivera to score.

Cashner's no-hit bid ended in the fifth. With a shift on, Dominic Brown laid a clean bunt single down the third base line.

Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday night at Petco Park.
