Bill Simmons to Join HBO

ESPN announced in May that it would not renew his contract

The man formerly known as "The Boston Sports Guy" is set to join HBO, according to the New York Times.

Simmons will start working for HBO in October and will host a talk show that will begin airing next year. He's also expected to do podcasts for the cable network.

ESPN announced in May that it would not be renewing Simmons' contract. At ESPN, Simmons helped create the "30 for 30" sports documentary series and launched the sports and culture website Grantland.

He got his start writing for the Boston Herald and for Digital City Boston in the 1990s, where he was known as "The Boston Sports Guy." He is also a former writer for "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"
