Aztecs, Toreros Do Their Part

In his six years as San Diego State baseball coach, Tony Gwynn has taken his Aztecs to some of the college game's hotbeds: Arizona State, Miami, Texas, North Carolina and Oklahoma State, our media partner the North County Times reported.

But it's games two hours north of San Diego that have the Hall of Famer fired up, the paper reported.

On Friday, in their season opener, the Aztecs will play Bethune-Cookman of Daytona Beach, Fla., at 2 p.m. in the second annual Urban Invitational at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton. In the 6 p.m. nightcap, USD will play Southern University of Baton Rouge, La. The teams will trade opponents and time slots Saturday for games that will be carried live on the MLB Network.
