Aztecs Lose Game, Streak … NCAA Tournament Spot?

SDSU's shooting woes lead to last-second loss at home

The Aztecs had won 164 straight games when leading with five minutes to play. The next time they put a team away after leading at the 5:00 mark, the streak will be 1.

San Diego State’s men’s basketball team had multiple chances to put away Boise St. on Saturday at Viejas Arena but gave them all away.

The Aztecs had a nine point lead with just 1:40 to play, then went inexplicably cold. SDSU missed seven consecutive free throws while the Broncos went on a 12-0 run that included six made foul shots (on six attempts) and a pair of Nick Duncan 3-pointers.

Trey Kell led the Aztecs with a game-high 17 points. The St. Augustine High School alum had the ball in his hands with SDSU trailing 64-63 and less than 10 seconds to play but he lost it off his leg and out of bounds, effectively ending the streak.

The loss drops the Aztecs in to a position they hoped to avoid … now they likely have to win the MWC Tournament Title in order to earn a 7th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Their non-conference schedule was, at best, unimpressive and the results (a 7-6 record) do not look good on a Dance resume.

The Mountain West is likely a one-bid conference in 2016 and that one bid will be the automatic one that goes to the Conference Tourney winner.
