Aztecs Beat NMSU, Improve to 3-0

In the off-season Aztecs head coach Rocky Long said he wanted his defense to force more turnovers, in no small part because it would help the offense be more potent.

Darnit if Rocky wasn't right on the money.

The Aztecs have won the proverbial "turnover battle" in all three of their games in 2019 and started 3-0 after a 31-10 victory at New Mexico State on Saturday night.

SDSU's defense forced four turnovers, making two interceptions and recovering two fumbles. The tone was set on the Aggies' first play from scrimmage. Josh Adkins completed a pass to Drew Dan but Darren Hall popped the ball loose and Dwayne Johnson, Jr. recovered at the NMSU 3-yard-line.

Ryan Agnew hit Daniel Bellinger for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Then the Aztecs went to the ground.

Running back Jordan Byrd, a New Mexico native, rushed for a career-high 128 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Fellow back Chance Bell carried 17 times for 116 yards and a score. As a team SDSU ran 47 times for 291 yards and built a 24-0 lead midway through the 3rd quarter.

The Aztecs come back home to open Mountain West Conference play next Satruday when they host Utah State.
