Emails and End-Arounds! San Diego State Coach Rocky Longs Experience With Emails From Fans

Rocky Long, you've got mail!

"I do get a lot of emails," says Rocky Long, head coach of San Diego State Football.

After the opening the season with a 31-10 loss at #13 Stanford, Long said most of this week's emails "were critical, telling me how to fix our pass defense."

The Aztec defense allowed 332 yards passing and 4 touchdowns to Stanford. Aztec fans weren't shy about sharing suggestions for defensive adjustments in the emails to coach Long.

"I love listening to all the experts and emails I get about how to fix (the defense)."

While coach Long usually doesn't respond to the emails, he says he reads most of them and compared it to reading the comics in a newspaper.

"Comics make me feel better and those emails, sometimes are so ridiculous, they make me feel better too. I appreciate that the fans care so much, but it puts a smile on my face because they are really good fans, but they don't understand football at all, as long as that comes across, I don't take it seriously."

While some emails from fans are not so helpful, coach Long admits that's not always the case.

"'I've had some good advice on emails before, it's from people who really understand the game, every once in awhile over the years they come up with ideas that I didn't think about and we'll put them in."

So any emails with good ideas on how to help the Aztec secondary before Saturday's game against Sacramento State?

After unleasing a coy smile, coach Long said "not this week."

But don't get email shy Aztec Nation, keep those emails coming, you know Rocky Long will read them and who knows, maybe one game later this season, you'll see your defensive adjustment idea play out on the field.

And that 11 man all-out blitz may just be the best play of the season.
