Another Charger Lost For Season

Running Back Dexter McCluster suffers season-ending injury

Between the Achilles tendon and the ACL the Chargers have had a lot of players lose the 2016 season to injury. Many of them have been of the non-contact variety.

But none of them are as outright odd as this one.

The Bolts placed running back Dexter McCluster on the “Reserve-Non Football Injury” list on Saturday. According to reports from NBC’s Pro Football talk, McCluster suffered a fractured forearm in an accident in his home. It appears he was moving something in the house when the injury occurred.

McCluster was not just the third running back; he was also the primary punt returner and was returning kickoffs, as well. The Bolts will go in to Sunday’s game against the Titans with just three backs: Melvin Gordon, Derek Watt and Kenneth Farrow. That’s a 2nd-year player and a pair of rookies against one of the NFL’s better defensive lines.

The Bolts re-signed wide receiver Isaiah Burse from the practice squad to take McCluster’s spot on the roster.

McCluster is just the latest player on San Diego’s roster to suffer a season-ending injury. Going back to training camp the list is awfully long:

WR Stevie Johnson – Knee
TE Jeff Cumberland – Achilles
RB Branden Oliver – Achilles
WR Keenan Allen – ACL
RB Danny Woodhead – ACL
ILB Manti Te’o – Achilles
CB Jason Verrett – ACL
ILB Nick Dzubnar – ACL
DE Caraun Reid – ACL
RB Dexter McCluster – Forearm

The Chargers made another move on Saturday, signing linebacker Deon King from the practice squad. King signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie from Norfolk State and joined the Bolts in October. He has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game. To make room for King the Chargers waived offensive tackle Tyreek Burwell.
