Allyson Felix, Ashton Eaton Among Olympic Champions Headed to Rio in Track and Field

Ashton Eaton and Allyson Felix are among the five reigning individual Olympic champions who will represent the U.S. in track and field at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Eaton is looking to become the first person to successfully defend and Olympic decathlon title since Great Britain’s Daley Thompson in 1984.

Felix will run the 400m and 4x400m in Rio, but she will not defend her Olympic 200m gold medal after missing the team by .01 seconds.

Other reigning individual Olympic champions headed to Rio include Brittney Reese (long jump), Jenn Suhr (pole vault) and Christian Taylor (triple jump).

The Team USA roster also includes several Olympic champions from past Olympics.

2004 Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin will enter the 100m, 200m and 4x100m in Rio. He is the fastest man of 2016 in the 100, and the second fastest in the 200m.

LaShawn Merritt, the fastest man of the year in the 200m and 400m, will run both events in Rio, along with the 4x400m. He already owns Olympic gold medals from the 2008 Olympics in the 400m and 4x400m.
