San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Chargers and running back LaDainian Tomlinson put to rest rumors that he would play elsewhere in 2009 as the two sides came to terms on a restructured three-year contract.
Tomlinson's old contract also was through 2011, but his new package is expected to help the Chargers in terms of the salary cap.
"I love San Diego and being a part of this team with my teammates," said Tomlinson. "My number-one priority was to stay here in San Diego. I truly believe this is the place that gives me the best chance to be successful and win a championship. I want to finish the job we started when I got here eight years ago. My heart has always been in San Diego. I couldn't imagine putting on another uniform."
The 29-year-old Tomlinson, the league's MVP in 2006 and a five-time Pro Bowl selection, holds the all-time NFL record for single season touchdowns (31). He rushed for 1,110 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2008, helping the Chargers rally late in the season for a third consecutive AFC West title.
Through eight NFL seasons, the TCU product has totaled 11,760 rushing yards to go along with 126 touchdowns. He also has 3,801 receiving yards and 15 more touchdowns through the air.
"It was important to me to get this done so (LaDainian) could continue his career here in San Diego where he means so much to our team, our fans and our community," said team president Dean Spanos. "The alternative was just unthinkable. He belongs in San Diego."
