Golden Fleece Nominees Named

Some government programs are being recognized, but for all the wrong reasons.

The San Diego County Taxpayers Association announced the finalists for its annual Golden Fleece Awards Monday.

The group outs county programs that they say exemplify wasteful use of taxpayer dollars.

Among the finalists:

The City of Carlsbad, which spent $68 million in 2008 to build "The Crossings" golf course, making it the most expensive public course in the country at the time and now has to pay nearly $2 million annually to subsidize operations.

The Metropolitan Transit System, which turned down an opportunity to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising revenue even though they have been forced to cut bus routes and increase fares.

The San Diego County Employee Retirement Association, which lost over $2 billion last year but hired a new investment officer who will earn a minimum of $2 million through 2012.

The winners, if you can call them that, will be announced at a dinner on May 20.
