Voters Rally Behind Kern, Crush Recall

A well-financed and hard-fought recall attempt has failed in Oceanside.

Oceanside voters on Tuesday threw their support behind City Councilman Jerry Kern, helping him crush a well-financed and hard-fought recall attempt that highlighted the sharp divide among the city's top elected officials, the North County Times reported.

At about 10:30 p.m., the County Registrar of Voters released tallies that showed, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, 63.2 percent of voters had rejected the recall and 36.8 percent voted in favor of it.

About 23,414 ballots were cast, with 14,803 people voting no on the recall, while 8,611 voted yes, the paper reported.

As the results streamed in, Kern said "I'm heartened by what I'm seeing. I'm humbled by it."

He said he hoped the city can now move forward after months of sometimes vitriolic campaigning.
