Voter Info Line Got Deadline Wrong

California voters have until Oct. 22 to register

California voting officials say they have fixed a glitch that caused a hotline to give some callers the wrong voter-registration deadline.

Some callers to the state's 1-800-345-VOTE line on Monday heard a message telling them, "Voter registration for the Nov. 6 election is now closed." In fact, voters have until Oct. 22 to register.

A spokesperson for the secretary of state's office, which runs the call line, said the problem was fixed by late afternoon.

Shannan Velayas said the system is getting 500 calls a day and rolls over to a backup line when it hits capacity. Only the backup
line was giving out the incorrect message.

Velayas said the state's contractor, AT&T, was at fault for running the message too soon.
