Meg Whitman's Campaign Reaches $80 Million Mark

Whitman has spent more in two months than Brown, Poizner combined so far

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is out to break all spending records for a statewide race, with her campaign having spent a total of $80 million so far just for the Republican gubernatorial primary.

In the last two months ending May 22nd, Whitman spent more than $33.8 million, most of it on television advertising, according to campaign finance reports released on Thursday.

That's more than her Republican primary rival, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, and presumptive Democratic nominee, Attorney General Jerry Brown, spent -- combined.

Granted, Brown has spent only $320,000 on his campaign so far, leaving him with $20.6 million raised ahead of the general election.

But Whitman has still spent more than twice as much on advertising than Poizner so far, with $42 million versus $17.9 million, respectively.

Both Whitman's and Poizner's campaigns are largely self-funded, with Whitman having given herself $68 million so far and Poizner $19 million.

Jackson West notes that the state parks budget is in the hole by a neat $100 million.
