Long Lines: San Diego Voters Smash Record

Voters wait in the rain for hours

Voters who lined up in the rain at the San Diego County Registrar of Voter's office on Sunday had up to a five hour wait to cast their ballots. The line snaked around the parking lot. Tents were put up to shelter those waiting in line. Those voters set a new one day record for early voting. Nearly 2,400 people cast their ballots in Kearny Mesa. Nearly 17,000 total have voted early this election.

The county's Democratic Party held a press conference Sunday to announce that San Diego now has more registered Democrats than Republicans. They base their numbers of registered voters on a supplemental report they say they purchased on Thursday evening from he Registrar of Voters that updates the current report.

The numbers don't tell the whole story, said Tony Krvaris, the head of the county's Republican party. There have traditionally been about 50,000 more democrats that republicans registered in San Diego, said  Krvaris, but voters still elected a Republican mayor and other Republican City leaders.

Voters can help the process go faster and smoother for everyone if they come prepared when they go to the polls on Tuesday, said Registrar Deborah Seiler. Voters should bring their sample ballot or call the Registrar ahead of time to check their registration status.
