On the first day of class, students at San Diego City College got a special guest speaker - the Governor of California.
Gov. Jerry Brown spoke one on one with Sociology students about Proposition 30, shortly before a scheduled morning news conference.
Proposition 30 would raise the state sales tax by a quarter cent for four years and raise taxes on incomes over $250,000 for seven years to help close California's budget deficit.
Brown is campaigning hard for the initiative saying it’s the only way to avoid billions of dollars in cuts to schools and higher education.
Brown asked students why they were interested in the family, which played into his message.
"If Proposition 30 passes, you'll have more classes, and fewer classes will be cut," he told students.
"Prop 30 is asking the most blessed to pay a little bit more money."
Others students asked the governor about his education and his definition of family and marriage.
