The man on a mission to ban divorce in California has reached a major goal and now will start collecting signatures to get his measure on the ballot for California voters.
John Marcotte, of Sacramento, is proposing the 2010 California Marriage Protection Act because, as his website, rescuemarriage.net, says, "Prop 8 did not go far enough in protecting traditional marriage."
Some question whether Marcotte is serious. He seemed to evade reporters questions when asked. The Huffington Post clearly thinks its a joke, as do a number of his fans on Facebook.
Beyond the question of motive, there is no question the guy is devoted. He's all over the Web and on his own site rescuemarriage.org he posted the following PSA posted that seems to satirize the issue.
Marcotte really did draft a ballot measure that would make it illegal for couples to get divorced. He says the way to save traditional marriage is not to stop gay people from getting married, but to keep straight couple from getting divorced.
The secretary of state's office last week approved Marcott's measure for the next hurdle -- signature gathering. Marcotte's measure needs nearly 700,000 approved signatures to qualify for the June 2012 ballot.
Marcotte has made quite a name for himself in the months since his 'til death do us part measure made the news. Nearly 26,000 people "like" his Facebook page and his websites have pulled in numerous comments.
The proposal would amend California's constitution to eliminate the ability of married couples to get divorced while allowing married couples to seek an annulment. He needs about 700,000 more valid signatures by March 22.
