San Diego Mayor Bob Filner took office Monday at his public inauguration ceremony in Balboa Park.

After taking the oath of office in a public ceremony at the Balboa Park Club, Filner said it was both “humbling and overwhelming” that voters supported his bid for mayor.

He also thanked opponent San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio for being gracious in the post-election transition.

Along with Filner, City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, City Council members Sherri Lightner, Todd Gloria and Marti Emerald and incoming council members Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman will take the oath of office.

“Mayor Sanders, I don’t think we could thank you enough,” Filner told the outgoing mayor. “I can start off with a balanced budget and a bond rating and it means we can talk about moving forward.”

Before Filner's took office, Sanders spoke briefly and wished Filner good luck.

“If it appears I’m a happy man, it’s because I am,” said outgoing Mayor Sanders joking that the two happiest days of a mayor’s life is the day he becomes mayor and the day he ends his term.

After Sanders wrapped up his speech, his Twitter account sent this update "Sanders, out."

Later Monday, there are a number of inaugural celebrations planned at UCSD/La Jolla Playouse, Mira Mesa High School, The Center, Jacobs Center and the San Ysidro Multi-Cultural Center.
