Arnold's Does About Face on Veterans Bill

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will sign a bill to honor Vietnam veterans after vetoing identical legislation two weeks ago in a political standoff with lawmakers.

Schwarzenegger is scheduled to hold a signing ceremony Friday at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, about 140 miles east of Los Angeles.

The legislation will establish each March 30 as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."

Schwarzenegger vetoed the original bill because he said he was not getting the major policy issues he wanted out of the state Legislature.

Lawmakers threatened to override the veto but instead passed a new bill with identical language.

The governor's spokesman says Schwarzenegger believes it is important to honor the state's veterans, even if lawmakers still have not delivered on his top priority, a new water policy.
