Valentine's Day

Rapper Baygeen Sentenced to 22 Years for Vallejo Homicide

Derek Ray Pittman, also known as "Baygeen," will serve time after plea deal.

Baygeen is behind bars.

Derek Ray Pittman, who was known in rap circles as "Baygeen," was sentenced to 21 years, 8 months in prison on Wednesday for the 2012 homicide of a Vallejo man, according to reports.

The Vallejo Times-Herald reported that Pittman pleaded guilty in June to shooting 23-year old Danell Lashawn Stevens, 23, on Valentine's Day 2012.

The shooting happened on the same day Baygeen wished the Country Club Crest neighborhood, where Stevens was killed, a happy day.

Pittman turned himself in to police a few days after the killing.

Pittman had a rap sheet throughout the Bay Area, including drug and theft charges.

It's not clear why Pittman shot Stevens, who had two children and was studying at Heald College to be a dental assistant.

Pittman was in 2013 briefly declared incompetent to stand trial after, he claimed, suffering major depression while in custody, according to one report.
