“The Tourist” Trailer Evokes Memories of “Knight and Day”

The first trailer for the "The Tourist," spy-thriller-romcom starring  Angelina Jolie and Johny Depp, is here, bringing with it flashbacks to one of this summer's flops.

Jolie stars as Elise, a sexy spy (of course), and Depp as Frank, an American tourist traveling Europe in an effort to get over a recent heartbreak. They meet on a train, whereupon she seduces him, but her motives are impure -- she's using him as a decoy, one she's chosen for his likeness to an internationally wanted criminal. It's "Knight and Day," but with a better cast.

This is well-worn ground for Jolie, but what Depp's doing here is anyone's guess. As the trailer progresses his accent goes from Brando to English to pan-European and he's clearly taking none of the proceedings too seriously. Rounding out the cast are Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell and Timothy Dalton.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck made his name with his Oscar-winning 2006 drama "The Lives of Others," about a West Berlin Stasi agent who becomes involved in the lives of the writer he's been doing surveillance on.

We're pretty underwhelmed by the whole thing.

"The Tourist" opens Dec. 10.
