Student Accidentally Shoots Self at SC High School

The injured student was conscious and talking and has been taken to a local hospital

A high school student in Greenville, South Carolina, accidentally shot himself in the cafeteria Friday morning, NBC affiliate WYFF reports.

The injured student was conscious and talking and has been taken to a local hospital, district officials said. No other students were hurt.

Greenville County Sheriff's Office spokesman Drew Pinciaro said in a news release that investigators are still trying to figure out what happened at Southside High School. Students told WYFF the boy had the gun in a pocket or backpack.

Southside and several other schools in the area were placed on lockdown following the shooting. Dismissal from Southside High School began just after 11 a.m.

Details about the student and how the gun got into the school have not been released.

District spokesperson Beth Brotherton told WYFF the school is not equipped with permanent metal detectors but has portable detectors that can be used as needed.
