Search-and-rescue crews from three counties are combing through the Eldorado National Forest for a missing Bay Area teacher.
Ed Cavanaugh, a teacher at San Francisco's Downtown Continuation High School, disappeared on July 17, his sister Debbie Cavanaugh Schultz told NBC Bay Area. He is about 45 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs 160 lbs and sports a bald head with a moustache.
Cavanaugh and a friend reportedly left for a dirt bike ride near Georgetown. But the teacher took off on his own after lunch and hasn't been seen or heard from since, Schultz said.
The teacher rents a cabin in the area and a surveillance camera shows Cavanaugh leaving the property at 11 a.m. But there's no sign of him returning, his sister added.
As of Saturday morning, over 60 friends and family members had joined search teams from Stanislaus, Yolo and El Dorado counties in a bid to find Cavanaugh.
Jeff Leikauf, a spokesman for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, said that they are being assisted by a group of motorcyclists and El Dorado County Off-Highway Vehicle teams. They plan to ramp up their efforts, he said Saturday.

Schultz said her brother is an avid outdoorsman with plenty of experience exploring the back country. However, she deemed it unusual for him to not check in with family or friends for over a week. She is also worried because her brother is diabetic and may run out of insulin.
The search-and-rescue teams have set up a command post at the Georgetown Fire Station on Wentworth Spring Road.
