Teen Suspect Dead After Shots Fired at Indiana Middle School: Police

According to authorities, the shooting was reported at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, Indiana

A teenage suspect is dead after shots were fired at an Indiana middle school Thursday morning, Indiana State Police said.

According to authorities, the shooting was reported at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, Indiana. Police said no students were injured but a teenage suspect was killed.

Indiana State Police said officers were alerted of a "potential violent act that could occur" at the school and responded to the scene.

With the school already on lockown, authorities confronted the teenage suspect outside the school, but he reportedly shot out the glass of a locked entry door to the school and ran inside, state police said.

Once inside, the suspect exchanged gunfire with police officers. The suspect was killed as a result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

All Richmond Community Schools were placed on lockdown following the shooting. Just after 8 a.m. officials reported the middle school building was "secure." Students were being transported to Richmond High School where parents could pick them up.

The school said all students were safe. All other Richmond Community Schools were expected to resume classes and follow a regular schedule.

"We will continue to work with the school & @suptdrmccormick to do everything possible to assist the community & support all those impacted by this terrible situation," Gov. Eric Holcomb said in a tweet Thursday.

"It is important to emphasize that due to the result of advance notification of the potential for a violent act at the school, the school had initiated their lockdown procedure which clearly prevented injury to students and faculty even though the suspect was able to enter the school," state police said in a statement.

Further information wasn't immediately known.
