Robin Sparkles Brings Mall Music Back – With a Rival

Forget about past rivalries between 80s pop princesses Tiffany and Deborah Gibson – on “How I Met Your Mother,” it’s all about Robin Sparkles vs. Jessica Glitter.

Series star Cobie Smulders said her character Robin Scherbatsky’s former alter ego, blonde mall-music superstar Robin Sparkles, will resurface on an upcoming episode of the sitcom. This time she’ll be battling it out with a rival – both for the title of Canada’s teen queen and the affections of returning guest star Alan Thicke.

“We're doing another Robin Sparkles video, and she's got a co-host who's played by Nicole Scherzinger – who's awesome!” Smulders said of the former Pussycat Doll and “Dancing With the Stars” winner, whose character co-stars on a Canadian TV show about teenagers in space with Sparkles.

Over the summer Smulders caught Scherzinger on stage at the Hollywood Bowl with her “HIMYM” co-star Neil Patrick Harris. “I saw her do “Rent” with Neil and she was amazing, so that's gonna be really fun.”

The actress says no matter how embarrassingly absurd the show’s faux early-90s-era Robin Sparkles music videos get – she’s previously appeared in “Let’s Go to the Mall” and “Sandcastles In the Sand” – “I enjoy those episodes probably the most.”

“I love it. I embrace it,” she said. “I mean, this is the only time in my life I'm ever going to find myself in a recording studio - like, EVER. I relish it.

Just don’t expect her to try to lay down some of her own music tracks for a bid at pop stardom. “No,” she laughed. “I’m like, 'I'm done torturing you all. I’m gonna go home now.’”
