HOW LONG MIGHT IT TAKE... to drive a sleigh from Jamestown, which is plunk in the middle of beautiful Gold Country, to the North Pole, which everyone knows is in a distant and frosty land, one that's magically decorated with icicles and snow angels? That's a tricky question. It depends on how many passengers are sharing the driving with you — if you've got eight reindeer that can take the reins for awhile, or ten lords a-leapin', that helps, time-wise — and how many bathroom and snack breaks you take along the road. Of course, you can always just make a date to visit Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, where a decorated train will whisk passengers straight to that enchanted pole. (Yes, trains at the holiday "whisk" passengers away, for that's part of the magical storybook spell.) And tickets for the seasonal experience are now on sale, so book your passage if you want to toot-toot to Santa's wondrous realm beginning on...

SATURDAY, NOV. 25: The POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride will choo-choo on select dates from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through to Sunday, Dec. 17. The locomotive will be wearing its yuletide, sparkly best, and inside the cars? Prepare to sip cocoa and feast upon cookies. There are keepsake souvenir tickets, too, for those hoping to enhance the scrapbook/fridge. And do you want to snap a nifty photo in the historic Roundhouse, one of the notable sights of the park? You can, "complete with steam engine in the background," so have that camera handy. If you're wondering if the POLAR EXPRESS is also offered in Sacramento by the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation, wonder no longer: It is. But it is now sold out for 2017, making the Jamestown adventure a fun and fa, la, la-esque way to enjoy the fabled train.
