Pilot Killed in San Bernardino County Mountains Plane Crash

A pilot was killed Tuesday morning in a plane crash in the San Bernardino County mountains.

The wreckage of the small plane reported missing early Tuesday was discovered early Tuesday, just north of Upland.

The plane was found just after a Piper PA28, which left Upland bound for Riverside, was reported missing around 5 a.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff's personnel hiked down the mountainside to reach the wreckage.

The pilot, the only person aboard the single-engine plane, died in the crash, according to authorities.

Details about what led to the crash were not immediately available.

"The last known contact was through Ontario Airport, and they did not report to us any problems the pilot was having with the aircraft the last time he was on the radio," said San Bernardino County Fire Battlaion Chief Doug Nelson.
