DISCOUNTS ON BLACK FRIDAY? They're plentiful, they're fairly easy to find, and if you check your favorite site or store, you just might find a whole caboodle of money-saving deals. But there's a pretty place where wearing plaid on the day after Thanksgiving will net you a nice and notable price-shaving situation: Amador County. Indeed, we're talking about the wine-nice, history-amazing slice of Gold Country, a place known for its hill-lovely drives, its dozens of accolade-garnering vineyards, and its more homespun, not-so-hectic shopping opportunities. And if you're seeking a more chilled-out expression of the post-Turkey Day holiday, one that will include a road trip to one of the Golden State's most golden areas, consider playing a part in...

PLAID FRIDAY: It's all plaiding-out on Friday, Nov. 23 at a number of regional businesses. And what you need to do, on your part, is perfectly plaid, er, clear: Wear plaid, score a discount. This is happening at some local eateries, too, and even if you don't end up shopping a lot, you are bound to see some other plaid-rocking participants, which is a sight that has inherent cheer. AMADOR, AHOY: Even if you can't make Plaid Friday in Amador County, consider a toodle through the area, if you love wine tasting, cozy restaurants, and towns that have roots in the 1800s. It's spectacular at any time of the year, but, as fall winds down, it takes on a mellow beauty that fits the season to a T. We mean a "P," of course, for, you guessed it, plaid.
