Off-Duty Sergeant Shoots at Suspect Who Fatally Wounded Man at Car Wash

A man was shot and killed Friday at a car wash and an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department sergeant patronizing the business opened fire on the suspect, who got away.

The man died at the scene of the shooting that happened about 11:10 a.m. in the 10100 block of Vermont Avenue, near Century Boulevard, on the border of South Los Angeles and the unincorporated Westmont area, according to the sheriff's department, which was investigating along with the LAPD's Force Investigation Division.

The victim not immediately identified.

The sergeant, who works at LAPD headquarters in the Employee Assistance Unit, shot at the suspect after hearing gunshots and was not injured, police said.

It's unclear if the suspect, described only as a Hispanic male, was hit by gunfire, authorities said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
