Nearly 70 Dogs Die in Beaumont Shelter Fire Blamed on Dryer

A statement from the animal group said 67 dogs died in Tuesday night's fire.

Investigators said nearly 70 dogs have been killed and almost a dozen hurt in a fire at a Southeast Texas animal shelter blamed on a dryer.

Beaumont police said Wednesday that the fire at the Humane Society of Southeast Texas in Beaumont appears to have started in a laundry area.

Shelter staffers and volunteers assisted firefighters in helping save some animals. Officials said 11 dogs were being treated by veterinarians.

Authorities with the Humane Society of Southeast Texas planned to survey the damage on Wednesday.
