Syria Deploys Army to Contain Protests

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad deployed the army in Syria's main port city on Sunday, Reuters reported. The state-operated news agency reported 12 dead in majority-Sunni Latakia, which has been rocked by pro-reform protests. Authorities blamed the deaths on "attacks by armed elements," according to The Guardian, but activists say security forces opened fire on protesters. Two Reuters television journalists have been missing in press-restrictive Syria since Saturday night, the news agency said. An Assad adviser told Al Jazeera that the emergency law that bans protests and gives free reign to secret police will be lifted, but she did not give a timetable.
