Nuke Plant Operator Under Fire As Radiation Spreads

As seawater levels near the damaged Fukushima plant show alarming radiation levels, Japan's government criticized Tokyo Electric Power Co. for failing to follow basic safety measures like seeing that their workers had protective footwear. Two workers suffered skin burns several days ago after stepping in radioactive water. A nuclear safety agency reported yesterday that seawater near the damaged Fukushima plant showed radioactive iodine that is 1,250 times higher than normal; yet an official said that the impact would be minimal on aquatic life. The news comes as engineers were trying to pump out radioactive water from the plant. CNN reported that authorities are still observing radiation levels in tap water around the country.
