Fla. Senator Aims to Limit Use of Food Stamps

A Florida senator is proposing a bill which would make it illegal for residents in the state to use their food stamp cards to buy sweets and potato chips. The proposed bill comes after reports of the cards being used in ATMs at casinos and strip clubs and even out of state. "We should do what we can to prevent dollars intended to help Florida's poorest families from being spent in the wrong places," the senator responsible for the bill, Ronda Storms, said in a statement. State Democrats are against the bill, which recently passed a committee. Storms isn't the first politician to propose such a bill. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed an initiative last year that would prohibit New York City's 1.7 million food stamp recipients from using food stamps to buy soda or other sugary drinks.
