Cell Phone Providers Know Your Every Move

It sees you when you're sleeping. It knows when you're awake. Well, not quite, but your cell phone does broadcast your location to your provider's company every seven seconds, The New York Times reports. Malte Spitz, a German Green Party politician, took Deutsche Telekom to court and found that they had recorded his location 35,000 times in a six-month period. The constant search for the nearest tower is an essential part of a cell phone's function, but many people are unaware that this involves saving the latitude and longitude for billing purposes. The revelation has raised concerns that this treasure trove of information could be abused for marketing purposes. In the United States, there is no law requiring these companies to report what material they collect.
