The Taliban claimed to have kidnapped 50 Afghan police from Nuristan province, said a spokesperson for the organization. In an email to reporters, Zabiullah Mujahid said that the Taliban ambushed the police yesterday afternoon following a tip that they would be traveling in Kunar province. CNN reported that the province’s police chief said the captured persons were unarmed and on leave. He added that negotiations are underway for their release. Previous kidnappings have occurred to intimidate those who would work with the Afghan government.
